Hello, I present to you the Bargheist, a creature that you can encounter in our student game : Unveil.
It draws inspiration from northern Scotland stories about the barghest, a monstrous and enormous wolf.
For our version of the beast, we wanted to make it look more like a sick wolf with abnormally proportioned limbs and make it look feral and hungry.
This is the first non-human creature I created and the biggest challenge for me was creating a beast covered in fur. I never put fur on the entire body before and had to have enough hair while keeping the polly count to a reasonable number.
First I sculpted the creature in Zbrush following the concept art made by Antoine one of our concept artists on this project.
Then I retopologied it in Maya and textured it in Substance Painter. I sent the beast to our animator Krysten for her to make its rig.
After that I used Fibershop to make the haircards and went back to Maya to create guides. I used XGen to place guides then converted every guides to curves that I used with the sweepmesh tool To get my cards. I then got the rig and posed the Bargheist.
Once I was satisfied I imported everything I needed to Unreal and started creating a shader for the hair.
Finally I checked with our technical artist Maxence to implement it in the level.
